Terra Plana – Walk The Talk

The fashion industry has been going green for years. Everyone is talking about sustainability and shopping the eco-friendly way. Yet, despite all that hype, few brands are actually walking the talk. Other than the occasional re-useable canvas tote, there is little real effort made to help save the earth. Terra Plana, on the other hand, is very whole-hearted about this mission.

Terra Plana, which means ‘flat land’, is named after the architecture of the Masias in northern Spain and denotes a harmony of inside and outside living. On a similar note, the brand’s conceptualisation is based on ideas of sustainability and ecological survival. In line with these ideals, the objective is to make wearable, comfortable shoes that are light and durable with recycled materials and innovative construction.

While some other labels are making grand proclamations about how their products are the very best, Terra Plana is humble enough to admit that the totally sustainable shoe is still a long way off. However, with each collection it moves a bit closer. At the cutting edge of footwear technology, the brand makes their insoles from a material called Memory Foam, which remembers where pressure has been placed on it. By hugging the feet closely, it creates an unparalleled comfort for the wearer.

The Vivobarefoot range is developed to provide the protection of shoes and the health benefits of going barefooted. These shoes are ergonomically designed to strengthen the muscles in your feet, realign your posture and stimulate your sensory perception. Conventionally, a pair of shoes that is good for your health brings to mind unflattering footwear favoured by grandmothers. This is why you will be surprised to find designs stylish enough to make any fashionista do a double take. The Juniper Quilt pumps (shown above, SGD189) in bright yellow features a pretty floral motif that will go nicely with a little black dress. For the office ladies, the Ceacilia (coming soon) in black will be perfect.

If you are a running junkie, the Evo (shown above, SGD229), Vivobarefoot‘s first running shoes, will be of great interest to you. With an ultra thin sole and a sucked out arch area, it promises maximum performance and lightweight breathability by letting your feet move the way they are supposed to. It is available in blue, yellow, white and green.

Terra Plana is located at #02-04, Mandarin Gallery
